It is absolutely essential to know the gender of nouns. Gender determines how adjectives, verbs and nouns change form. Noun gender needs to be learned, but basic rules can help.
Masculinum
- most words ending in consonants (t, n, v, d, r, c…)
- example: názor, student, muž, banán, hrad
Femininum
- the word ends with the letter a, v
- also most words ending in e / ě
- part of words ending in soft consonants (ž, š, č, ř, c, j, ď, ť, ň)
- example: škola, rýže, noc, tramvaj
Neutrum
- the word ends with the letter o, í
- part of words ending in e / ě
- example: kuře, pivo, zelí, kafe
